Good nutrition is essential to student health. That means replacing junk food with more fruits, vegetables and meals prepared with nutritious ingredients.
We ask parents to bring gluten free items of choice for all children at this time. Some children eat more, some – less, some children like almost everything and some are picky eaters. Regardless in which category the child falls, we want to make sure that healthy and nutritious food is offered to all and a habit of eating healthy is established. As more children are added to the program, all involved families will be notified in advance to make necessary adjustments.
Reason #1: Communication and Well-Being
Conversations during the meal provide opportunities for the children to bond, connect, and learn from one another. It’s a chance to share information and news of the day, as well as give extra attention, which fosters warmth, security and love, as well as feelings of belonging. It can be a unifying experience for all.
Reason #2: Model Manners (and more)
Family mealtime is the perfect opportunity to display appropriate table manners, meal etiquette, and social skills. We keep relaxed atmosphere and do not criticize but lead by example. Children get a chance to taste, smell, share their opinion, put together simple meals and clean-up after themselves.
Reason # 3: Expand Their World…One Food at a Time
We encourage children to try new foods, without forcing, coercing, or bribing. We try to introduce new food along with some of the stand-by favorites. Remember that it can take 8-10 exposures to a new food before it is accepted, so we learned to be patient. Trying a new food is like starting a new hobby. It expands your child’s knowledge, experience, and skill.
Here is the sample of our Weekly Menus, so you could see what kind of foods your child was exposed to and had an opportunity to taste (even if they say they had “nothing” for lunch):
