When we try to define what children take away from their years in Montessori, we need to expand our vision to include more than just the academic skills.
Mathematics will never make children be loving and caring, nor will accurate knowledge of the size and shape of the world will help them to appreciate its beauties. We will lead them during the first years to find greatest pleasures in nature, learn about animals and observe real things. Children will educate themselves under the right conditions.
LOMS is fully employing the philosophy and materials of Maria Montessori, which provide a unique alternative to traditional schools, both public and private:
late start at school (5-6 years)
one age per class to suit teachers pre-planned activities
seated at desks to passively listen
frequent interruptions
limited curriculum (grade level)
little socialization
large group lessons in a lecture format
teacher as source of answers
rewards & punishments
adult centered schedule
peer comparisons
emphasis on grades
emphasis on conformity or competing in a group
teacher as disciplinarian
corporal punishment
little parent involvement often only as fundraisers
graded report cards
early start at school (1-3 years)
mixed age groups to learn by observing other peoples work, directly or indirectly and learning from it
freedom to move and choose work in the classroom
longer free work periods
enhanced curriculum with emphasis on individual growth
socialization is encouraged to promote language skills
individual lessons to learn at their own pace
self correcting materials
natural, logical consequences
child centered schedule
individual progress
emphasis on learning and self-motivation
respect for individual differences
emphasis on “self” control
peace in education
